Ceiling track hoists fitted to a vaulted ceiling?

As we visit sites to survey for ceiling track hoist systems we often see bedrooms designed with sloping or vaulted ceilings. They are a lovely design feature often incorporating roof windows, maximising natural light and providing extra ventilation. This type of ceiling design can lend a feeling of extra space to a room which otherwise could feel cramped.

Sometimes these rooms use visible laminated timber beams to lend additional ambience and warmth. These can sometimes be useful as structural support for the ceiling hoist system.

A vaulted ceiling needn’t mean that a ceiling mounted hoist is not an option: we just need to extra attention to the system design and use the structural elements that are available to us.

A recent project involved installing a hoists system that provided a transfer from a changing room out to a communal pool area. The changing space had a traditional flat ceiling (albeit, quite high), whilst the pool had a vaulted ceiling, with visible laminated timber beams proving the structural support.

Upon survey we sketched a design which we could work with, and transferred this to a dimensioned drawing along with the physical loading calculations to the architect.

We had a design drawn up and verified for secondary track support, suing the laminated beams as primary. As it was a swimming pool, all steelwork was specified as stainless steel to resist corrosion in the high humidity environment. The support channel was then powder-coated to blend in to the primary décor, with plastic cover trim on all openings.

The hoist track could then be installed with the minimum of fuss, with regular access equipment and without emptying the pool.

The finished install looks fantastic and gives unrivalled access from the new changing area into the pool.
