Which shower trolley do I choose?

When investing in a shower trolley it is essential to ensure the specification is right.

The Barella has long since been a worthy contender when considering an investment into a shower trolley. Here we look at why this trolley is a favourite, and considerations when planning to purchase to ensure the specification is right for you.

Platform options

Our sales team most frequent question when discussing shower trolleys is – what is the internal dimension of the platform? Space is critical when using a shower trolley, not only for reasons around the users’ size as much as the usable space for turning and bathing. So, if you are considering purchase, try and work out what internal platform width you require to work for you. It’s important not just to compare the external dimensions, as we have found many shower trolley designs have siderail angle that limits the useable platform width.

Use our chart below to look at the platform dimensions on the Barella range:

Platform

External Platform Dimension

Barella Paediatric

Barella Adult (Standard Platform)

Barella Bariatric

More recently, there has been a huge shift towards the wide top platform, as customers are putting more store on the useable surface area. Whilst 80cm internal width is very generous compared to what’s generally available, we have now developed the all-new extra wide Maxi Shower Trolley; introduced in 2022, it offers a massive 90cm internal platform width (106cm external width).

Space constraints in the environment

There are numerous benefits in opting for a mobile shower trolley, such as easier access for carers, shallow bathing experience for the user, transportation between rooms etc. But if space is at a premium, you’ll have to consider the practicality; sometimes it’ll be better to consider a wall-fixed shower table instead, as this can be folded up against the wall when not in use. With our team on hand to help you decide, why not send in the dimensions of your room? We’ll draw everything to scale with shower trolley / wall mounted table options to demonstrate how it will work.

Electric or Hydraulic?

There are myths around hydraulic being more reliable, but in our experience it’s not the case. Electric actuation is more popular now, but we believe this is down to user experience – it’s easier for the carer and smoother for the user. If the trolley is only getting occasional use, then the hydraulic has advantages with no battery charging to worry about. If your budget is limited, again the hydraulic option is there, but otherwise there’s a strong case for going electric.

Weight capacity

There is a line-up of trolleys in our range, going up to a maximum of 245kg safe working load. From our experience working load is only a decision point on the adult/bariatric trolleys, as anyone who is able to fit a paediatric trolley will be well within the limits.

When considering the adult trolleys we find 95% of the demand is for the 180kg capacity, and since introducing the wide top version, demand for bariatric models have reduced. This goes back to our introduction on platform options above – the useable width of the platform is typically more critical than the weight capacity.
