The UK Government wants to ensure that every child with SEN and disabilities gets an education that allows them to achieve their full potential. Where a child has SEN, a school’s statutory duties include doing its best to ensure that the necessary provision is made for them and that they join in school activities with other pupils as much as possible.
Using equipment tailored to students’ needs can improve their sense of belonging and self-respect, positively impacting their overall outlook on school.
Designing school spaces
The newly constructed Woodlands Meed facility, situated on the premises of Woodlands Meed School in Burgess Hill, has been designed to cater for students with diverse special educational needs and disabilities. The new college will significantly improve facilities for pupils and includes twelve new classrooms and specialist areas, a new dining hall, kitchen and welfare areas and a hydrotherapy pool.
Although only a proportion of pupils would require additional provisions, the whole school would need to address issues for ‘inclusive’ design principles which should underpin all elements of design for children with SEN and disabilities. This would have included sufficient and suitable toilet and changing room spaces, including wheelchair-accessible facilities.
Health and personal care needs
There are many reasons why SEN schools and mainstream schools with SEN pupils benefit from the use of mobile shower trolleys. They offer a safe and comfortable bathing solution for students, with many models including features that also ensure safety, ease of use and clinical benefits for staff and carers.
With a real focus on ensuring that the college better met the needs of pupils with varying levels of mobility, the client was keen to find a bathing solution that would be safe, secure, and robust enough for everyday showering in a demanding environment. When putting the shower trolley out to tender, the school would have focused on these key elements, with expectation that quantity and lead times could be fulfilled for the school’s planned opening.
The local community Occupational Therapist initially approached Wealden Rehab to visit the school to conduct a product assessment for the Adult Barella. Following a successful assessment, the OT was then keen to secure an order for two Adult Barella shower trolley units with elevated backrest. Barella shower trolleys are designed with the intention of increasing the safety, comfort, and efficiency of the changing and bathing process, and consider the needs of each user.
After testing the shower trolley, the school then put in a request for nine Barella trolleys to be included in the contractor’s original tender for the project.
Barella - the preferred choice for many environments
The Barella shower trolley is the result of many years of research, fine-tuning and critical observation. The result is a market-leading shower trolley that outperforms its competitors in almost every way. The Barella also offers the college exceptional value for money, and support for both users and their carers.
Key features include:
- Generous platform size.
- Stronger, higher stainless steel side rails that enable the trolley to also function as a shallow bath.
- Anti-corrosion process that enables the Barella to withstand even the most demanding environments.
- Adjustable height between 610mm and 1000mm.
- Unrivalled stability.
Barella shower trolleys offer exceptional usability. Available in four sizes, they meet the needs of a wide spectrum of patients and environments, and the shower trolley of choice in many care settings.
Opening soon!
The order of Barella trolleys is ready to be delivered in August when the final touches to the facility will be taking place, ready to welcome new pupils from September 2023. We cannot wait to hear how the pupils are enjoying their new school environment.
