The perfect paediatric bathing aid offers optimal support

It became quite a task for the Occupational Therapist to find the ideal bathing support for a toddler's bath time

This assessment visit for a Turtle bath support was for a 2-year-old girl. The ideal bath support would need to be a suitable size and sit low in the bath to provide enough support to keep her safe. Phoebe and her Occupational Therapist had tried other types of baths supports but they just could not meet all her needs.

Phoebe has cerebral palsy and suffers from muscle rigidity; she sits well in a chair that provides optimum lateral and back support that creates a cradling comfort. Her Occupational Therapist was becoming concerned and thought there would be no ideal solution and they would have to compromise.

The assessment walked through Phoebe's needs

The main objective for our visit to Phoebe to try the Turtle bath support, was to provide enough postural support whilst allowing enough access for personal care. The secondary objective was for the support to be low enough in the bath so that she could enjoy the water as it was her favourite time of the day. It would be great if the support could better accommodate her size and even support her as she grows.

The assessor started by adjusting the main elements of the frame to provide the optimal bathing position both for phoebe and her mum. Both the Occupational Therapist and the mother could not believe how perfectly small the Turtle support was and how well the support fitted to her frame. They tried various positions to ensure the Turtle bathing support was a good fit for her requirements and impressed with how her head was supported between the Turtle’s cushions.

It was apparent during the assessment that Phoebe would need an extra lateral belt. This was an easy fix as the Turtle offers multiple belts for extra reinforcement. She also needed an extra trunk support cushion to hold her body in the correct way.

Making bathtime a more comfortable experience

On completion of the assessment, her mum said it was “Definitely the one” and “Can we just keep this one with us?” They were ecstatic that they finally found a bath support that suits all their needs and was able to fold away as they had such limited space in their bathroom. The Turtle bath support is lightweight so they could even take with them when they went away.

After the Turtle was delivered to the family, Wealden Rehab provided a second visit to set up and show the family how to make any adjustments.

Phoebe was now able to enjoy her favourite time of the day with optimal safety while mum was able to clean without having to worry about her slipping under the water and providing support for all here postural needs.
