Anxiety-Aware Bathing Equipment

How the Turtle bath support helped a child with cerebral palsy and autism

Background

We were contacted to support a young child with cerebral palsy, autism, and severe anxiety. The child was unable to use his existing Abacus platform bath without an appropriate support system. Due to anxiety, he could not be present for the assessment process, which required a highly sensitive and flexible approach.

Requirements

  • A bath support suitable for use on a platform bath
  • The ability to switch between upright and reclined positions
  • Minimal disruption during assessment to accommodate the child’s anxiety
  • A product with appropriate size and weight capacity

Challenges

  • The child’s anxiety meant he could not be present during assessment visits
  • Limited space on the platform bath restricted equipment size
  • Previous options trialled were either too small or lacked sufficient support
  • The family needed time and space to trial the equipment without pressure

Solution

Following advice from the OT, Adam approached the visit informally, wearing casual clothes and avoiding any form of a sales pitch. Assessment was carried out with the child’s mother trialling equipment on his behalf, given her detailed understanding of his needs.

The Size 3 Turtle was able to provide the required positions but offered minimal room for future growth. The Robby was too narrow and did not meet the weight capacity required. The Size 4 Turtle was eventually found to be the best fit, it provided the required support and could be securely used on the platform bath. Although it cannot be repositioned while the child is seated, adjustments can be made via hoist if necessary.

The Turtle is now in situ, and the child is able to bathe again comfortably, improving his hygiene routine and quality of life, while easing anxiety for both him and his family.
