Stuart Greaney, Product Advisor at Wealden Rehab supported a Care Team in Shrewsbury who were experiencing ongoing difficulties finding a suitable shower commode chair. The chair needed to be compatible with a powered stand aid and able to position correctly over a Closomat toilet. This was particularly challenging due to boxed-in pipework behind the toilet, which restricted rear clearance.
The team had already trialled several different chairs, but none met all the functional, environmental, and clinical requirements.
Assessment
During the initial visit, a powered hi-lo shower commode chair was assessed. However, it could not be positioned far enough back over the toilet because of the rear boxing. Further discussion with staff highlighted that the main reason for wanting a powered chair was the difficulty they had experienced tilting their previous shower chair, rather than a requirement for powered movement itself.
The Solution
Wealden Rehab recommended trialling the RAZ ART shower commode chair. The chair’s rotational tilt-in-space mechanism provides smooth, effortless tilt and allows the centre of mass to remain centrally positioned within the chair. This design enables a shorter chassis, making it ideal for environments with restricted space.
By comparison, chairs that rely on gas struts shift the centre of mass rearwards during tilt, requiring a longer frame to maintain stability and limiting their suitability in confined bathroom layouts.
Outcome
The RAZ ART’s hi-lo height adjustability allowed the chair to be set at the correct height for safe transfers using the powered stand aid, while still positioning accurately over the Closomat toilet.
The client also presented as a sacral sitter. Using the RAZ ART’s IPAS (Ischial Pelvic Alignment System), the seat was adjusted to ensure the pelvis was correctly aligned with the seat aperture. This improved postural support, comfort, and overall functional positioning during toileting and showering.
Result
The RAZ ART provided a practical, space-efficient, and clinically effective solution, meeting all the environmental and postural needs of both the client and care team. The successful setup enabled safer transfers, improved positioning, and greater ease of use for staff in a challenging bathroom environment.
