An adjustable indoor chair with an outdoor wheelchair base, delivering support and independence while meeting complex needs.
Requirements
A joint OT visit was requested to support and assist the OT in the provision of complex seating for a child. The chair needed to provide postural support, provide flexibility/adjustment and ultimately be comfortable to allow the client to participate in daily activities.
Challenges
The user has a tracheotomy and needs a high level of head support to achieve the right position for breathing and swallowing. Her wheelchair was heavily customised, and the OT was struggling to find a comfy chair that delivered comparable support.
In addition, the user has 24-hour care and is hoisted, so she needed a solution that provided easy access for carers. The chair also had to be simple to manoeuvre for use in regular activities around the house.
An established relationship with the OT enabled her to feel confident that as a company we would be able to support her in her assessment and provide seating solutions appropriate for her clients' complex needs.
Solution
The Strata is an adjustable indoor chair with an outdoor wheelchair base. It provides the comfort, support and manoeuvrability the user requires, but in a standard chair – which the OT wasn’t expecting given her complex needs.
It's light and easy to manoeuvre, enabling carers to move her inside and outside. It provides postural and head-support while providing the comfort she requested additional to her wheelchair, meaning she experiences fewer transfers into different equipment.
The Strata has given the user a higher level of independence. For example, she’s able to use her iPad on her lap, and can even have her music lesson with her keyboard balanced at the perfect height on the armrests.
