Facilities upgrade for children’s respite unit

A council-managed respite service for children and adults recently set about converting an under-utilised first floor to increase their capacity and consolidate the service with another older site.

Benefit from our broad experience

Wealden Rehab was invited to consult with the architect and building contractor, advising on hoisting and hygiene solutions across the project. Wealden Rehab was aware of the space and needs of the site as they had previously installed overhead hoists into the sensory and soft play area on the ground floor.

Working closely with the client and the architect a plan was proposed which provided the necessary equipment across the site, whilst accommodating the existing structure and layout. The contractor was able to accurately plan and install services and structural supports into the building which allowed the installation to proceed quickly and minimise the number of days our engineers spent on site.

Two of the care bedrooms are linked by ceiling hoist to the assisted bathroom space, a design which will clearly benefit the care staff. This required careful integration and communication with the contractors to allow the hoist tracks to pass through the door heads so as to minimise heat loss and noise transfer from the bathroom. The contractors provided the apertures at the correct dimensions, our engineers fitted the tracks and then the contractor finished the door heads so that the finished article was tidy – creating a very satisfactory and cost-effective room to room system.

The client chose an Avero Motion bath for the assisted bathroom. This product provides postural support and comfort, along with the ability of those who can do independent transfers in and out of the tub. Thermostatically controlled bath fill is coupled with an auto-level fill stop so that the bath can be confidently left to fill whilst preparing the user in the adjacent bedroom.

There is also an assisted shower room which is equipped with a Premium 175 folding shower table and a GoLift overhead hoist. The shower table has a folding safety rail for increased user confidence and an integrated water collection table to minimise wastewater splashing.

The client chose GoLift hoisting throughout the project, opting for constant in-rail charging to remove the anxiety of care assistants forgetting to put units back in specific charging locations. The GoLift 400 has a 28 stone working capacity so more than adequate for their intended requirements.

XY (H Frame) room-cover hoist tracks in the bedrooms ensure that care staff enjoy maximum flexibility in planning transfers. Coupled with height-adjustable profiling care beds the equipment reduces manual handling risk to a minimum.

Wealden Rehab offers a wide range of solutions for ceiling track hoisting. The GoLift can be planned to suit your space through straight, curved or XY (H Frame) track systems.
