It's well known that users with dementia can have difficulty with sitting correctly, but as with anyone, if they're poorly positioned in their seat with a lack of postural support, this can lead to pressure injuries and spinal pain.
We’d like to share two separate accounts where the delivery of a Saros specialist chair has changed the user’s quality of life significantly.
One care home resident just couldn’t find comfort in any other chair...
Nearly everyone has a favourite chair in their home. The same can be said for one of our users – an elderly gentleman living in a care home in Maidstone, Kent. After a number of years of living with dementia, the user’s mobility had significantly declined. He also found it difficult to sit comfortably in most of the chairs within the communal lounge, with the exception of one, particularly comfortable chair.
Unfortunately, as a communal chair, the user had to share with other residents. His inability to sit in any of the other chairs in the lounge meant that when the user couldn’t use his “favourite” chair, he was forced to stay in bed and be isolated from the rest of the community. His wife decided to self-fund the purchase of a similar chair so that her husband could sit in the lounge whenever he wanted to.
Wealden Rehab were contacted to recommend a suitable, similar chair. Our product assessor, Blake, recommended a popular chair from our adult supportive seating range – the Saros specialist chair.
The Saros chair is a tilt-in-space postural support, modular seating system that is available in a variety of colours and fabrics. Key features of the chair include:
- Adjustable seat depth and width
- Adjustable back angle with set lock
- Adjustable tilt-in-space
- Adjustable seat to footboard height
- Adaptable back cushions for high levels of comfort and support
We took the Saros chair to the care home for the user to try. Both he and his wife were delighted with the chair and immediately placed an order, which was delivered within days. We followed up with them a few weeks later and were delighted to hear that they are both extremely happy with the chair, which has helped ensure that the user can get out of bed and join in with activities in the care home every day, improving his daily routine and quality of life.
Poor posture was leading to eating and drinking problems
A 100-year-old Great nan was using a rise and recline chair that simply didn’t support her. She had lost a lot of weight and began to lean a lot in the chair, leading to complications with eating and drinking every day.
The client began to get depressed as she was in so much discomfort. Her grandson purchased the Saros chair from Wealden Rehab as it was renowned for its postural support, and from day one of the chair being delivered there has been happiness in her home. Not only has her sitting posture improved immeasurably, but she's also put on some weight again as eating and drinking in the chair is so much easier.
