An Isle of Wight–based Occupational Therapist sought support from Wealden Rehab to provide suitable bathing equipment for a patient experiencing neuropathic pain, reduced postural control, and significant discomfort when using standard shower chairs.
The OT worked closely with Harjit, one of Wealden Rehab’s specialist Product Advisors, to identify a solution that would improve patient comfort, safety, and independence, while also supporting carers in daily care routines. There were several challenges ahead; the patient suffered neuropathic pain, making it difficult to tolerate conventional shower chair seats. She also presented with reduced postural control, leaning heavily to the right, which increased the risk of sliding or falling. Care staff required equipment that was safe, adaptable, and easy to use, while also being compatible with the patient’s new Geberit wash/dry toilet.
How the Raz AT Shower Chair met the users needs
-
Pressure Relief & Comfort
The ischial/pelvic alignment design offloads pressure, maximising comfort. -
Postural Support
Addition of a lateral support provided stability, reducing right-sided leaning. The tilt-in-space function further enhanced safety by minimising the risk of sliding. -
Carer-Friendly
Carers highlighted that the chair is “easy to manoeuvre”, and the adjustable armrests make washing the patient easier. -
Compatibility & Long-Term Value
The Raz chair integrates seamlessly with the patient’s Geberit wash/dry toilet, allowing safe, supported use. Its adaptability ensures it can evolve with the patient’s changing needs, making it a cost-effective long-term investment.
Outcome
The patient has gained comfort, safety, and reassurance when using bathing and toileting equipment. Carers report increased ease in delivering personal care, while the OT expressed satisfaction with both the quality and flexibility of the Raz chair.
The patient expressed gratitude for Harjit’s expertise and support in selecting and configuring the right equipment to meet her needs.
