When providing a user with healthcare equipment after an assessment, it is so much more than just a product offering – we are providing independence, we are bestowing safety and most importantly, we are giving them confidence. And this is exactly what happened when assessing and providing a male user in his 40’s with a shower chair.
As we entered the room to start the joint assessment, we were taken aback by the poor condition of the shower chair the user had to use daily - he didn’t have a choice but to use the not-fit-for-purpose shower chair every time he visited the bathroom.
- The shower chair was heavy making it difficult for the user to manoeuvre.
- The height of the shower chair was not suitable, making self transfers unsafe and the shower chair unstable.
- The seat had been worn down which meant the user was sitting on part of the metal frame.
Our male user had a spinal injury; however, he had good upper body strength and could side transfer. We also knew he could manoeuvre the chair himself, had a history of pressure sores and it was crucial he was able to maintain his independence. With this is mind, the RAZ SP shower chair was the perfect solution for him.
Introducing the RAZ shower chair range
The RAZ SP is part of the renowned RAZ shower chair range from Wealden Rehab. All shower chairs in the range are multi-adjustable, provide superior support and have excellent pressure management abilities. Their multiple features allow the shower chair to be fine-tuned to an individual user and if the user’s needs were to change or progress overtime, the shower chair can change with them.
How the RAZ SP met the user’s needs
The key features of the RAZ SP shower chair that closely aligned to our users needs are as follows:
- The RAZ SP is a lightweight self propel shower chair that is easy to manoeuvre thanks to its ergonomic push rim wheel design.
- The RAZ SP is height adjustable, has strong and sturdy armrests and the footplates can be easily removed and put in place – ensuring a safe transfer and stable shower chair.
- The RAZ SP allows for a high specification visco seat cushion to protect the user’s skin. The seat cushion is contoured for pressure reduction and pelvic stability whilst the foam provides comfort and durability.
Following the assessment, we were able to make the adjustments to the RAZ SP at the workshop which allowed the user to use the shower chair immediately on delivery.
A pleasing end result
The user is very happy with his RAZ SP shower chair as he is now able to transfer with confidence and toilet with ease. The lightweight frame means he’s able to maintain his independence throughout the day, particularly towards the end of the day when fatigue sets in. Knowing the user is now using a piece of equipment that is safe, supportive, and stable truly makes our day.
