The RAZ AT proved an outright winner when all round support was required.

Other shower chair designs just did not support the user enough to carry out personal care tasks

This assessment visit for a shower chair was particularly rewarding as we were able to come to the aid of the end user Louis who had not yet found the right shower chair for him. Louis has cerebral palsy with strong extensor patterns which in turn required a supportive chair for his posture and correct size, but it also needed to be robust.

Previous chairs had left Louis feeling very unsafe and insecure, as when involuntary movements occurred, he was hurting himself on the chair. Louis’ daily care was conducted by his mother who found a lot of shower chair designs did not support Louis enough for her to carry out personal care tasks. This entire process was often prolonged due to lack of support and increased anxiety. Louis’ occupational therapist had many successful outcomes from using the RAZ shower chair previously. This became an obvious choice to look at with Louis, as they felt it would provide superior postural support and it is widely known for its exceptional durability for more demanding users.

During the joint visit to try the RAZ AT chair, the main objective was to provide enough postural support whilst allowing enough access for personal care. The assessor started by adjusting the main elements of the frame to provide the correct hip angle, seat depth and seat height to suit Louis. This gave a great foundation to gain an understanding to what additional postural accessories would be required. The areas of focus were hip alignment over the aperture, head support whilst having flexibility for change in movements, and targeted lateral support to Louis’ upper body.

Trialling the lateral supports, leg adductors, design G headrest, chest harness and 4-point pelvic belt was a remarkable success. Louis, his mother, and the OT were so happy with this solution knowing shower time was going to be a more enjoyable task.

Once funding had been agreed and the product was delivered, Wealden Rehab provided a second visit to adjust, set up and show the family how the chair worked and could adjust for future changes to Louis’ needs.

The provision of the RAZ AT shower chair resulted in Louis being able to interact with the showering routine as he felt safe and comfortable.
