There are undeniably a variety of factors to consider when assessing a shower chair for a bariatric user. However, from our experience we have found that there are three critical points to consider, ensuring maximum efficiency and comfort for both the user and the carer.
1. The Users transfer method.
Whichever transfer method you choose, the RAZ shower chairs will ensure that user transfers are as smooth as possible, thanks to their adjustable seat height.
- Standing transfer
It is common for shower chairs to have a fixed high seat height, which is not practical for standing transfers. To work successfully the chair will need to have a seat height that is low enough for the user to sit comfortably to the back of the chair. The seat height on the RAZ shower chairs can be adjusted to suit the needs of your user.
- Overhead or mobile hoist transfers –
When transferring using a hoist you should consider tilt-in-space and seat height. The RAZ AT600 easily tilts to ensure the user can get to the back of the chair safely. You may also want to adjust the seat height when using this method; raising the seat will help with hoisting, as well as the comfort and posture of the carer who will be attending to the user.
2.The durability of the product.
The durability of a shower chair can have a massive impact of the user’s confidence, as it can enable and encourage independence. Attention needs to be paid to:
- The safe working load of the chair –
You must consider the longevity of your shower chair, accounting for any change in user weight, especially if there is fluctuance or fluid retention. With a weight capacity of 270kg (42 stone), the bariatric RAZ shower chairs will scarcely be outgrown. Furthermore, the RAZ AT600 is the only heavy-duty shower chair on the market that offers tilt-in-space with this weight capacity.
- Accessories, such as the armrests and footplates –
These areas are often overlooked on assessment and can be susceptible to breakage in the medium to long-term. The weight capacity on RAZ heavy-duty footplates is 159kg (25 stone) and the armrests alone are tested to 270kg (42 stone). This incredible durability allows bariatric users to use any upper body strength to reposition and manoeuvre themselves. Such features not only allow for user comfort but ensure the longevity of the equipment and engender confidence.
3. Aperture Size.
So often we find bariatric chairs get designed with an overly large seat aperture. However, it is important to remember that the user’s pelvis does not continue to grow as their weight increases. The seats we offer throughout our shower chair range put an emphasis on supporting the pelvis; in our bariatric range you will find supportive seats with just one size aperture.
- Make sure the seat width is correct -
The seat width needs to be measured to accommodate the user and to ensure there is sufficient room between the arm rests. All RAZ shower chairs have an open sided design to easily accommodate users and gives easy access for hygiene procedures.
